Dr. Venkatesh will provide a keynote address describing the colliding effects of an intergenerational emergency physician workforce with a rapidly evolving healthcare delivery landscape. What was once a job to cover in a shift in a hospital “ER” with physicians largely of the boomer generation has evolved into a career that spans the acute care continuum and includes a diverse workforce that is newly including Gen Z graduates of residency programs. Participants will learn to contextualize the daily challenges of emergency medicine including ED crowding and inpatient boarding, purported workforce surpluses and the changing span of acute care within the context of national policy emerging research in healthcare delivery.

Review data and understand implications of workforce trends in emergency medicine including the increased diversity of the workforce.
Characterize ED crowding as a a broader acute care hospital capacity problem resulting from a supply-demand mismatch for emergency care services.
