The Healthy Sleep Mindset: A Nocturnist's Guide to living the 'Shift-Life'

This session will explore the five key components of a healthy sleep mindset: value, prioritize, personalize, trust, and protect—each essential to achieving restorative sleep, particularly for emergency medicine professionals navigating irregular schedules and night shifts.

The session will focus on shifting the cultural mindset around sleep from an afterthought to a foundational aspect of health and performance. Attendees will learn how to actively prioritize sleep by modifying controllable factors such as caffeine and alcohol intake, meal timing, melatonin use, exercise routines, light exposure, and strategic naps or sleep-wake schedules.

Additionally, emphasis will be placed on personalizing a sleep routine to fit individual circadian tendencies and shift patterns, with practical strategies provided to build consistency. Trusting the process of developing good sleep habits—and one’s own ability to adapt—will be highlighted to reduce sleep-related anxiety and counterproductive behaviors. Participants will also learn how to protect their sleep environment and routines by setting boundaries, creating wind-down rituals, and embracing the concept of "laying the day to rest."

Importantly, the lecture will advocate for a team-based approach to sleep at home—recognizing that household cooperation and shared understanding can make or break efforts to achieve healthy sleep.
