Dr. Kristyn J. Smith, DO is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Smith is an accomplished educator, clinician, and advocate for inclusive excellence in emergency medicine and medical education. She is the Assistant Dean for Premedical Experiences and Enrichment. In this role, Dr. Smith leads immersive clinical and enrichment programming that spans the medical pipeline—from high school through post-baccalaureate education—with the goal of fostering interest in the field and preparing aspiring physicians from diverse backgrounds. She is also the Sub-internship Director for the Emergency Medicine department, leading the fourth-year clinical rotation for medical students. Through this position, she teaches clinical skills related to emergency care and advises medical students through the residency application process. She also is a developing leader in clinical simulation related to communication and health equity. She received the 2024 Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD) Marcus Martin Award and the 2023 Penn Medicine Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Antiracism Award for her work.
She is the immediate past Chair for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine's Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion section (AAEM-JEDI). She was previously a Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians (PACEP) Leadership Fellow. In these roles, she advocated on the regional and national level for equitable access to emergency care.
Dr. Smith received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Smith’s work reflects a deep commitment to equitable access to medical education, transformative mentorship, and systemic change within healthcare—driven by a passion for cultivating excellence at every stage of the medical journey.
