Whether you call it Flash Pulmonary Edema or Sympathetic Crashing Acute Pulmonary Edema (SCAPE), ED physicians all know the satisfaction of aggressively resuscitating these patients to turn them around. We also share the frustration of trying to explain this disease process to our colleagues in other specialties, some of whom may even question its existence. In this session, we take an evidence-based look at the pathophysiology and treatment of this life-threatening disease process.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize the vicious pathophysiologic cycle leading to SCAPE
Use non-invasive positive pressure effectively in the treatment of acute pulmonary edema
Utilize the best medications at optimal doses to stabilize the patient, and then set them up for ongoing management
