After declining for many years, syphilis cases are on the rise again, including sexually transmitted cases and congenital syphilis. This session will review common and uncommon manifestations of syphilis, as well as basic testing algorithms. Key vulnerable populations who may need ED testing will be discussed, as well as how to handle a syphilis diagnosis in pregnancy, and how to treat patients during the ongoing Bicillin shortage.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to name and identify less common manifestations of syphilis, such as ocular syphilis, otosyphilis, and syphilis-induced nephrotic syndrome.
After this session, the learner will be able to increase screening in key high-risk groups who frequently present to the ED.
After this session, the learner will be able to discuss alternative treatments for syphilis, and who should always be given penicillin, even in the setting of a shortage.
