Dr. Monika Pitzele obtained her PhD from Northwestern University and MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she also completed the Emergency Medicine residency program. She currently is on faculty at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She serves as the Medical Director of the Sexual Assault Program and PI of a large grant focused on sexual assault by the United States Health Resources and Services Administration.
Dr. Pitzele has a long-standing interest in forensic emergency medicine. She currently holds the Chair position for the Forensic Section of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Her contribution to the Section includes Section newsletter articles, webinars and book chapters. Dr. Pitzele participates in regular educational activities at the Rush Emergency Medicine Residency, both on general EM education and forensic topics. She also educates Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners and paramedics regarding care of sexual assault survivors, trauma informed care, domestic violence and strangulation. She was also a PI on an abstract presented in 2024 at the AAEM Conference in Austin on related topic and an oral presenter and participant in the Speaker Development Program at the 2025 AAEM Conference in Miami.
