This session will explore advanced strategies for asthma management in the emergency department, focusing on interventions that go beyond traditional bronchodilators. Attendees will learn how to identify appropriate patients for ED-initiated SMART therapy and how to safely incorporate it into discharge planning. The session will also introduce the most commonly prescribed monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for asthma, highlighting how these therapies impact ED care. Finally, we’ll review the current evidence for both intravenous and nebulized magnesium, discussing when each may be appropriate in severe exacerbations.
Learning Objectives:
After this session, the learner will be able to demonstrate how to initiate SMART therapy from the emergency department, including appropriate patient selection and dosing strategies.
After this session, the learner will be able to list common monoclonal antibody therapies used in asthma management and explain their implications for acute care in the ED.
After this session, the learner will be able to compare the indications, benefits, and limitations of intravenous and nebulized magnesium sulfate in the treatment of severe asthma exacerbations.
