Disturbingly, few providers understand the critical difference between tracheostomies and laryngectomies. This lack of knowledge has been shown to be present across multiple specialties, including emergency medicine. If a doctor misidentifies the type of surgical airway present in a patient, catastrophic consequences can occur. This talk will teach the audience the critical differences between these surgical airway types, including how to identify a tracheostomy vs a laryngectomy and how to properly treat patients with each type of airway.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to visually differentiate between a patient with a tracheostomy versus one with a laryngectomy.
Know the options to properly administer oxygen to patients with both laryngectomies and tracheostomies.
Upon completion, participants will be able to provide ventilatory support, including NIPPV and intubation, for patients with both tracheostomies and laryngectomies.
