Hyponatremia continues to be the most common electrolyte abnormality encountered in clinical settings. While common, it is fraught with much fear and anxiety from clinicians as fear of complications occur with correction, especially associated with the devastating osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS). However, there has been some recent literature regarding the best methods for correcting the sodium and regarding how common ODS really is. The speaker will discuss an algorithm-based guideline using up-to-date literature on how not to mess up these critically ill patients.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss some controversies surrounding osmotic demyelination syndrome.
Discuss which patients may require rapid correction of sodium.
Discuss the best methods for rapidly correcting sodium.
