Once a pulmonary embolism is diagnosed, the next critical step is rapid risk stratification to guide appropriate disposition and treatment. This brief, focused lecture will review how to use clinical tools, biomarkers, imaging findings, and patient factors to assess severity. We'll break down which patients are safe for outpatient management, who requires anticoagulation and monitoring on the floor, who may need procedural intervention, and who may need thrombolysis or ICU-level care. Expect practical, case-based discussion aimed at sharpening real-time ED decision-making.
Learning Objectives:
Apply clinical tools and biomarkers to risk stratify patients with confirmed pulmonary embolism in the emergency department.
Identify which patients with PE are appropriate for outpatient management versus inpatient or ICU-level care
Recognize imaging and clinical indicators that suggest a need for advanced intervention, such as thrombolysis or thrombectomy
