Managing patients with massive hemoptysis comes with certain challenges and considerations. It is often necessary to secure a definitive airway with endotracheal intubation to both prevent asphyxiation in the immediate setting and exsanguination shortly thereafter. This session will discuss hemodynamic considerations in the peri-intubation period and current recommendations on lung-protective positioning while on the ventilator.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize massive hemoptysis and employ a team-based approach to the resuscitation of these patients
Understand how patient positioning affects oxygenation and ventilation in patients with life-threatening hemoptysis
Understand different oxygenation and ventilation strategies for intubated patients with massive hemoptysis
