You are on shift and have just seen another patient pop onto the board - a young woman with chief complaint of "wants pregnancy test." While this chief complaint may fail to entirely pique an emergency physician's interest, this encounter represents a meaningful chance to intervene and produce improved outcomes for both individual and population health. Only 65% of women of child-bearing age are currently using some form of prescription contraception, and we know that for many patients, the ED is their only point of contact with the medical system. We can and should be doing more to encourage ED initiation of contraception. This session will provide a practical framework for how the ED physician can approach this topic with sensitivity, efficiency, and the necessary knowledge to prescribe contraception. If you have every looked at the formulary for OCPs and thought "there are too many choices," this session is for you.
Learning Objectives:
Feel confident prescribing every form of contraception.
Use the provided framework to implement your own departmental guidelines and structure for ED initiated contraception.
