The purpose of this session is to provide a practical approach to evaluating and managing abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in the emergency department. There will be a concise review of common and high-risk presentations using a case-based lecture format. Emphasis will be placed on initial stabilization of hemorrhage, targeted diagnostic workup, and a brief review of the PALM-COEIN classification system to guide clinical reasoning. Learners will feel more comfortable with the disposition of these patients, determining when patients are safe for discharge vs. requiring more intensive management.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize the key clinical features and red flags associated with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) across various age groups.
Apply the PALM-COEIN classification system to categorize causes of AUB.
Formulate an appropriate diagnostic and management approach for AUB presentations in the emergency setting, and identify cases requiring urgent or emergent consultation.
